The Business Case for Taking a Radical Sabbatical

How Sailing Changed My Career Trajectory

August 10, 2020 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. via Zoom

Do you dream of taking time off from your career to follow a passion completely unrelated to your industry? Does your rational brain have a list of reasons why you can’t? Bills, family responsibilities, student loans, forgone career advancement…

Join Dr. Dana E. Sims she shares her experience of making the decision to take a radical sabbatical away from her career in talent development to sail the east coast of the US and the Bahamas. She’ll describe how the sabbatical has changed her perspective on talent development, grew her skillset in unexpected ways, and transformed her career trajectory. Finally, she’ll share the business case for rejecting your rational brain’s belief that taking a radical sabbatical will sink your career.

During this webinar, we will:

  • Be amused (or frightened) by the comparison of our careers to a ghost ship in the Bermuda Triangle
  • Explore the variables that make up personal risk tolerance, and
  • Discuss how to translate radical sabbatical experiences into employable skills

Dr. Dana E. Sims’ leads by example to promote courage and question conventional wisdom. She recently completed her radical sabbatical of over a year on her sailboat, SV Sea Paws.

Dr. Sims is the cofounder of Fedability, helping individuals shape their career journey and reignite their excitement about their work. Fedability also aims to help organizations connect the dots between the business goals and human performance.
