Kirkpatrick Evaluations

A thorough analysis of training should focus on all aspects of the training, from delivery to measurement of organizational results.  The analysis should follow the evaluation levels specified in the Kirkpatrick Model Levels 1-4.  Level 1 measures student reactions regarding acceptability and usefulness of the training immediately following the training event;  Level 2 encompasses the gathering of information that measures the students level of knowledge during or immediately following the training event;  Level 3 measures the degree to which the enhanced knowledge and skills, or improved attitudes, transferred and impacted the student’s performance on the job; while Level 4 measures the overall return on expectations from the training, on the part of senior decision makers.

The entire process of goal setting, evaluating, testing, measuring and surveying results is known as the Kirkpatrick Business Partnership Model.  It starts with understanding what the training is to accomplish, then negotiating with management to identify success indicators for the training, as well as identifying critical behaviors and the drivers of those behaviors.
